Improving Choices takes place at our centre in Newnham Street where learners feel safe and supported in an environment where they can really thrive. This centre is unlike any they have experienced before and offers them structure, progression, individualized learning and support. Learners can choose some of subjects they take here although English, Maths and IT are embedded as they are seen as being crucial to their ability to progress on to further training , volunteering or work.
Learners are taught to manage their anxieties and become self-aware so they can develop their relationships with others as well as progressing towards independence.
They will work towards qualifications where it is appropriate and will be supported as they venture out into the community and attend work placements.
During the three years they are with us learners often surprise themselves by passing exams, taking part in community events and engaging with work experience. Some even learn to overcome barriers to learning like choosing not to speak or look others in the eye. There is a feeling of security here but there is always a challenge in place to make sure the learners progress.
As soon as our learners start with us they are encouraged to think about what might come next. The qualifications they take with us and the work that they do while they are here all help to move them closer to becoming independent members of society.
